Why the Family Sought Treatment
The parents were concerned about the uneven position of their child’s upper and lower teeth. Some teeth were out of alignment, and the lower front teeth were crowded. The family consulted an orthodontist to address these concerns.
Assessment and Treatment Plan
The orthodontist examined the child, assessed the bite, and checked the space available for the teeth. Clinical photographs, a panoramic X-ray, and a lateral cephalometric X-ray were taken.
Taking the child’s age and dental development into account, metal braces were selected for both arches. The treatment stages, cleaning routine, and need for regular appointments were explained to the child and parents.
Treatment Stages
Preparing the teeth. The dentist checked the teeth and gums. Professional cleaning removed plaque and tartar. The child was shown how to clean around the braces using an orthodontic toothbrush and interdental brushes.
Fitting the braces. Metal brackets were bonded to the upper and lower teeth, and initial archwires were placed to begin gradually moving the teeth.
Adjusting the braces. At scheduled appointments, the orthodontist changed the archwires and monitored tooth alignment and bite contacts. Oral hygiene was also checked, with guidance to help the child improve their cleaning routine.
Maintaining the result. After the braces were removed, the enamel was cleaned and polished. Fixed retainers were bonded behind the front teeth, and removable retainers were made. The parents received instructions on retainer wear and follow-up visits.
Treatment Result
The upper and lower teeth were aligned, and crowding in the front teeth was resolved. The child’s smile became more even and balanced.
Following the retainer instructions and attending orthodontic check-ups during growth are essential for maintaining the result.
